Course Introduction
With Hong Kong’s aging population and the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, the demand for support staff in the healthcare system has surged. Patient Care Assistants play a vital role in medical teams, assisting with essential clinical procedures such as blood collection, electrocardiograms, and intravenous catheter insertion.
This course, offered by the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Kwai Chung), aims to provide practical training in blood collection and blood culture techniques for individuals aspiring to join the healthcare industry. It equips learners with the skills needed to become phlebotomists or clinical assistants in clinics, laboratories, or medical institutions.
Course Structure
- Fundamentals of Human Anatomy and Physiology
- Standards for Blood Sample Collection and Handling
- Pre-blood Collection Preparation, Blood Collection Techniques, and Post-collection Care
- Blood Culture Techniques and Pediatric Blood Collection Methods
- Communication with Patients and Emotional Support Skills
- The course includes both theoretical and practical components, with demonstrations and simulated practice (using dummy arms)
Assessment
- Learners must complete and pass in-class practical assessments and a written test and an attendance rate of 70% or above is required to receive the certificate.

Entry Requirements
Completion of S5 under the Old Academic Structure / S6 under the New Senior Secondary Academic Structure; or
Completion of a QF Level 2 programme that is deemed acceptable to the respective Programme Board; or
